Aduke patted Adoo’s back as she cried, her heaving sobs coming out muted for fear of waking Zander up. Her make-up was all over her face and her hair was a mess. She had stumbled into the flat, taking off her shoes and casting them off in a careless heap on the floor, with Aduke looking at her incredulously.

“Stupid shoes. Why did I wear them?” Adoo said before bursting into tears, leaving Aduke bewildered and confused.

“You’re crying because of the shoes?” Aduke asked.

“Men are horrible. God punish all of them,” Adoo had sobbed. Aduke made her sit down and now was letting her cry, rubbing her back and crooning softly to try to calm her down. After a while, when Adoo calmed down to occasional sniffles, Aduke went to the kitchen and emerged with a steaming mug of Ovaltine. She handed it to Adoo, who took it gratefully, taking tentative sips. Aduke leaned back against the sofa, and waited for Adoo to speak when she was ready.

“I don’t understand why I never seem to be enough for the men who come into my life,” she said, looking down into the mug. Aduke said nothing and Adoo continued. “All this time I thought he really liked being around me but it turns out he was just using me to replace someone else.”

“You mean Toby?” Aduke asked. “How is that?”

“It turns out I’m a replica of the woman he once loved who didn’t feel the same about him. He carried around that broken heart until he found someone who reminded him of her: me. It’s like this Hannani has haunted me from the day Toby and I met.”

“Hannani?” Aduke shook her head, not following.

“Oh, you don’t know. Let me tell you then.” Adoo proceeded to narrate the events of the evening to Aduke, taking care to mention the connection between her, Hannani and Toby. Aduke clucked sympathetically but otherwise kept her comments to herself as Adoo spoke.

“Well?” Adoo asked, sniffling.

“Tau… I really don’t know what to say, DooDoo,” she said, using her old nickname for Adoo. “It’s not as if you were in a relationship, per se, and the man didn’t make any promises.”

“I know, Aduke,” she sniffed. “But it still hurts to think that while I thought we had a good friendship going he obviously felt differently.”

“I think you need to give yourself a bit of time to think things through, sha. I also think you should give him a chance to explain himself. Just because you look like this Hannani woman doesn’t necessarily mean he’s using you to replace her. In all the time you’ve spent with him has he ever given you reason to think that way?”

“I … I just don’t want to get hurt again, Aduke,” she said quietly.

“You can’t avoid being hurt in life … and you know how insensitive men can be. I think you should hear him out, eh?”

“Well, I agree with you on one thing … Anyway, I need sleep,” Adoo said, yawning and stretching as she stood.
